Condolences to Betty Bests’ family. 
I learned of her passing today. She was the first Anglican I met and truly was instrumental  in giving me the Lord’s hope and vision as I pursued a teaching degree in 1974.  Because of her words of wisdom I pursued a Masters degree; taught with great Joy 30 + years and used Betty’s example
 to  remember to love each individual (child )
individually finding and helping to build their unique strengths!

As a student at CA State Chico in the early 90's it was my good fortune to serve as Betty's teacher's assistant in tennis for four semesters. I was honored and humbled to be recognized and worthy of that role, especially since her accomplishments and contributions to tennis far exceeded mine. Despite my relative inexperience in leading classes and providing instruction, Betty always made me feel that what I had to offer was important. Such was her style to always show gratitude and appreciation to others, independent of whether they were friends, students, or colleagues. Consequent to her infectious smile and uplifting spirit, I could always depend on feeling as if it were the first day of spring even if it were a gloomy and cold day in December. 

Betty’s accomplishments in athletics and as a teacher, along with her generous offering of her time to her community and her efforts in promoting women’s athletics are no doubt impressive and rightly deserving of the many accolades she earned over her lifetime. With a smile and due respect, I will remember those elements, but what is most prominent in my mind when I think of Betty Best is she was my teacher who became my friend, who I will always remember as a kind, warm hearted, friendly, and truly decent person who inspired others to achieve their best, to harness passion in their pursuits, to open their hearts to the goodness of others, and always providing a beautiful example of showing gratitude with her grace and radiant smile for the opportunity to live life to its fullest. Thank you Betty for the pleasure and honor of knowing you.

I have fond memories of Betty from over the years, as a member of the women's tennis team in the early 70's, as well as a colleague and friend. She taught me how to have fun as a coach and teacher, and to show your passion for your sport. She was my first "inside backhand" opponent (really just rallies) and was a freaking backboard. She introduced me to "Brocks Ice Cream" in Yuba City, which we often visited on our trips home from Sac or Davis. She loved ice cream and sweets. I now take my Special athletes to Brocks and continue the tradition of having a good time and always think of Betty when I'm there. I will miss her broad smile and welcoming ways that bring back wonderful memories of the good old days.  My condolences to the family and tennis community. We lost a good one. Deb Roth

Betty Best... I remember her Red Corvette, her beach blonde hair, tan and smile. She was such a beautiful and  fit woman. As a freshman, my first PE class, she taught my tennis class at Chico State. I just loved how young at heart she always was... rest in peace beautiful!

I  was recently informed of Betty's passing and am saddened.  I remember her as such a warm, friendly, and kind person who led a full life.  Blessings to her memory.

Betty was very welcoming and friendly to us upon our  joining Chico Racquet Club.

I just saw that Betty passed away last month.  I had Betty in college for a tennis class.  She was the best (no pun intended)!  She was always positive, smiley, energetic and enthusiastic.  I very much enjoyed Betty and her class.  Condolences to her family - I know she will be missed. 

I offer condolences to Betty's family. She was a valued colleague and friend, a skilled athlete and coach, and a genuinely lovely person.

I am so sad to have just learned of Betty's passing. She was my first PE teacher when I arrived at Chico State in 1969. We loved playing field hockey with her! Whenever I would see her on the tennis courts or around town or campus, she would always remember me and share her warm smile. I will always remember and admire her grace and athleticism coupled with her efforts  advocating for women's sports. 

Betty was such a lovely positive person.  As a relatively non-athletic person that participated in a running class Betty was always so kind and funny naming me the leader of the "Smell the Roses" runner group.  :-)  I knew I was slow and loved her positivity and kindness.

I am sorry to hear of Betty's passing.  I have so many fond memories of Betty at the Chico Raquet Club where she was such a key organizer of night leagues, tournaments and just everything...keeping the court play at its best.  She was so kind to everyone.  I enjoyed playing mixed doubles against her even though she was way better than me.  She never made me feel like I didn't belong on the court with her.  She was one of a kind. A beautiful spirit.  May she rest in peace.

Betty was my neighbor for 10 years. She was not only a great athlete. She was one of the kindest and most positive individuals that I have ever known. The world has lost a true angel. 



Betty and I were born on the same street in Vancouver, B. C. just days apart.  We had been lifelong friends, always staying in close touch.  I am so grateful for the thoughtful call I received from B. Haley upon her passing and have a lifetime of memories of my dear friend.  She was a great athlete and her family were like second parents to me after my dad died when I was very young.  She will be missed in my life.  Rest in peace!  Love, Barbara (Haggert) Byers, W. So sorry for your loss. Betty was an inspirational teacher and coach. She allowed a naive, young tennis player the opportunity and space to develop into an adult. Thank you, would not have made it without your mentorship.
