He was the son of Albert Henry Kunz and Margaret Mary Charlton (nee Coyle), and stepson of Graham Charlton.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Bob graduated from the University of Miami and remained in South Florida for most of his life before finally settling in North Carolina. Always jovial and good to talk to, he worked at various times as a bartender, a private investigator, a disc jockey, an insurance adjuster, and a driver. He was a lifelong enthusiast of music, dancing, desserts, classic cars, and motorcycles.
When describing Bob, more important than what he did is who he was. Kind, loving, humble, and fun, he was inquisitive about all things and found great pleasure in the simplicity of life, whether watching football on Sundays or enjoying robust servings of ice cream and Klondike bars with his boys. He was a loving husband, a proud father and stepfather, a doting grandfather and great-grandfather, a beloved brother, and a loyal friend.
Bob truly lived life to the fullest. He engaged with everyone he met, genuinely curious about their lives. He cherished a quiet conversation. He looked forward to travel, visiting Europe, Alaska, and even crossing the United States twice—once on a motorcycle and once in a motor home. At his side for every vacation and in his arms for every twirl around the dance floor was his precious wife, Cynthia.
Family was the most important thing in Bob’s life. He loved his sons greatly, and he embraced his stepsons and daughters-in-law as though they were his own children. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant joy.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia, sons Mark, Bruce, and Leigh, stepsons Nick and Rob, daughters-in-law Kathleen, Julie, and Shawna, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren (with a seventh soon to arrive in August), sisters Mary and Jean, and brother Harold.
Bob left a mark of love and kindness in this world, and he will be greatly missed.
