Lorraine Susan Atwell

Lorraine S. Atwell, a Michigan native and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps passed away on March 22, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 6th, 1957, to John and Florence Wessel.

She graduated from Memphis Community Schools in 1975 and attended St. Clair Community College before enlisting in the Marines. She was especially proud to have served as secretary to the then Brigadier General Barrow, and as a Drill Instructor, Lorraine spent time at Parris Island training recruits. She had many remarkable stories and fond memories to share about her time while in the service.

After the Marines, Lorraine settled in North Carolina, where she met her husband Tony Atwell. Together, they built a loving home and had two sons. Lorraine supported Tony through his time with the Concord Police Department by raising their sons and battling illness much of her adult life. Despite facing many health challenges, Lorraine never gave up.

Lorraine was an active member of Connect Christian Church, where she volunteered at every opportunity. Her selflessness and compassion touched the lives of many, always trying to make others feel better, even when she was feeling unwell. God is pleased with how she fought this battle and used it for His glory

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and a niece. She is survived by her husband Tony Atwell, and two sons, Patrick (Sarah) and Casey Atwell, as well as four sisters, five brothers, eight grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, along with several special aunts and many friends.

Her family has organized a celebration of life, which will be held at Connect Christian Church on April 2 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Connect Christian Church in her memory. Lorraine will be deeply missed, and her legacy of fierce strength, faith, and perseverance will continue to encourage all who knew her.
