Born on February 10, 1940, in Morganton, Lawrence spent his life deeply rooted in the community he loved. After proudly serving four years in the United States Air Force, stationed in San Antonio, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lawrence returned home to embark on a long and dedicated career. He was employed at Morganton Dyeing and Finishing, where through hard work and leadership he rose to the position of Superintendent of Finishing.
Lawrence was a man of steadfast faith and commitment. As a charter member of Grace Baptist Church, he helped lay the foundation for a congregation that would serve as a spiritual home for many. His devotion to his faith was matched only by his love for his family.
He shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janice Woodie Caraway. Together they built a family that brought them immense pride and joy. Lawrence is lovingly remembered by his sons Walter Henry Caraway and Christopher Lawrence Caraway (wife Kate), and his daughter Jennifer Hawkins (husband Eric). His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren—Stevie Dellinger, Lauren Baird, Kyle Caraway, Zachary Hawkins, Kaleb Hawkins, Erica Hawkins, Hayden Caraway, Riley Caraway, and Haley Caraway—and five great-grandchildren: Knox Clark, Paxton Clark, Henry Baird, Bennett Baird, and Lena Joy Hawkins.
Lawrence also leaves behind his sister Frances Frankin (husband Luther) and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Henry Caraway and Leila Denton Duckworth Caraway; sisters Avis Roberts, Gladys Chapman, Indiana Smith, Marie Causby, Vivian Dolan, Phyllis Grady; and brothers Howard Caraway, Kenneth Caraway, Glenn Duckworth, Bill Duckworth, and Donald Caraway.
An avid fisherman throughout his life, Lawrence found great joy as a member of Elk Park Fishing Club and treasured the time he spent fishing at Kiawah Island. Whether casting a line or sharing stories with friends and family by the water’s edge, these moments reflected the simple pleasures he valued most.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on May 31st, 2025 at Grace Baptist Church located at 1939 Paul Shuping Avenue in Morganton. Family will receive friends at 1:30pm prior to the service at 3:00pm.
Lawrence Ellis "Paw" Caraway’s life was marked by devotion—to his country through military service; to his work through years of dedication; to his faith as a founding member of his church; and most importantly to his family whom he loved beyond measure. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
