Katherine was born and raised in Lenoir, North Carolina, the daughter of J.K. and Nell Menefee, and sister of Mattie. She was a flutist in the Lenoir High School Band, trained with Brevard Music Center Orchestras, and was a graduate of Stetson University, the Juilliard School, and the Dalcroze School of Music.
She went on to become a professional flutist, working as a chamber musician, soloist, and teacher. She was also part of the administrative and artistic teams at the New Jersey Youth Symphony and Youth Orchestra.
Katherine performed at Carnegie Recital Hall three times. She debuted there in 1971, with a rave review in The New York Times, and performed there again in a duo recital in 1977 and a solo recital in 1984.
After living and working for many years in New Jersey, she returned to North Carolina. Prior to her retirement, she was the accompanist for Carolina Concert Choir and music director for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville. She also taught privately, performed with the Kanuga Woodwind Quintet, and was a featured guest artist for the Hendersonville Community Band.
Katherine had a uniquely calming presence, bringing peace and graciousness to every environment she entered. She was genuinely curious about the lives and perspectives of her family and friends, and deeply interested in world music and cultures, nature, and spirituality.
She was beloved by and is missed by many, including her sister and brother-in-law, Mattie Menefee Rhodes and Milton Rhodes; her nephews and their wives, Milt and Karen Rhodes, Ben and Priscilla Rhodes, and Addrian and Alison Rhodes; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be scheduled for a later date.
The family expresses their gratitude to Lincolnton Health and Rehab in Lincolnton and Brookdale South Park in Charlotte for their kindness, support, and care.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Katherine’s honor may be made directly to Carolina Concert Choir or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville.
