Joyce Elizabeth Hazlewood

Joyce Elizabeth Gill Hazlewood, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on January 7, 2025, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by the love of her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Born in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Leon and Elizabeth Pritchett Gill, Joyce graduated from Durham High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from Watts School of Nursing in 1964. A proud member of the United States Army Nursing Corps, she served as a 2nd Lieutenant and met her future husband, Glen, during her service. Joyce dedicated her life to nursing, caring for patients of all ages throughout her distinguished career.

Beyond her professional life, Joyce was passionate about reading and loved crocheting beautiful blankets for her family. She found joy in the simple things and always gave of herself selflessly. Her family and friends will remember her as a kind and compassionate soul who brought comfort and warmth to everyone she encountered.

Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Glen Hazlewood of Charlotte, North Carolina; her children, Carol Hazlewood of Morrisville, North Carolina, and Craig Hazlewood of Rock Hill, South Carolina; her sisters, Margie “Sue” Hall (Mike) of Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Donna Goings of Charlottesville, Virginia; and her cherished feline companion, Cleo, who was always by her side.

A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local animal shelter or library in her honor.
