Jim married Carolyn Mahaffey on June 3, 1960 at Crestwood Baptist Church, Jackson, MS. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before he passed. He graduated from Central High School in 1956 and then graduated from Millsaps College in 1960. After graduating from college, Jim served in the US Air Force in Ogden, Utah and then worked at Boeing Aircraft while living there.
In 1971, Jim received his Master of Theology from Golden Gate Seminary. He and Carolyn, along with their children, Julie and Cliff, were appointed by the International Mission Board to serve in Indonesia as church planters. He was also the Chaplain/Evangelist at Kediri Baptist Hospital on the Island of Java for 14 years. For the next three years, he served in that same capacity at Immanuel Hospital on the Island of Sumatra.
In 1988, many missionaries had to leave Indonesia and the McAtees joined others to form an Itinerant Teaching team who traveled all over Southeast Asia for seven years teaching lay pastors how to serve their church. He then changed his focus and began new work in Burma after the country opened to Foreigners again. Jim and Carolyn served a total of 32 years as missionaries overseas.
After retiring in 2002 they began serving again in 2008 as volunteers at Glorieta Conference Center in Glorieta, New Mexico until they moved to Bothell, WA in 2017 where they enjoyed being a part of Meadowbrook Church, Redmond, WA . Jim was honored in 2022 t0 receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from Gateway Seminary.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of Mint Hill, NC; two children, Julie Milam (Phillip), of Spanaway, Washington, Cliff McAtee (Krista), of Mint Hill, NC; one sister, Pat Ramey (Allen) of Florence, Mississippi, 5 Grandchildren, Kailee Aguilar (Antonio), Claire Byrnes (James), Amber Love (Tanner), Mikayla McAtee, Connor McAtee, and two great grandchildren.
