David Derrell Crump

David Derrell Crump passed away on August 2, 2026, at the age of 76, in the Cardiac Care ICU at Atrium Health Pineville Hospital following complications of COPD and heart failure. He was born on October 30, 1949, in Monroe.

David was a funny man with a wonderful sense of humor who loved playing practical jokes on his friends. His laughter, quick wit, and playful spirit brought joy to those around him and created memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Following his graduation from high school, David answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served with honor in Vietnam and was awarded several distinguished military medals, including several Purple Hearts. His service reflected the courage, sacrifice, and deep love of country that remained with him throughout his life.

A gifted mechanic by nature, David worked as a large equipment mechanic, electrician, and machinist. He was naturally mechanically inclined and seemed able to fix just about anything. Family and friends knew that if something was broken, David was the person to call.

When he wasn't working, David found happiness riding his Harley and taking day trips to the beach, where he always enjoyed a fried seafood plate. He was proud of his family and proud of his country, and he lived his life with strength, intelligence, and love.

David was a strong, intelligent, handsome, and loving man who never turned away anyone in need. Whether someone needed a repair, a helping hand, or simply someone to count on, he was always there. He never expected anything in return. Even when his body was exhausted, he simply kept going—working, helping, giving, and pushing forward until he mowed for the last time. That tireless spirit and generous heart defined the man so many knew and loved.

David leaves behind his loving wife, Linda Crump; his daughter, Beth Crump; his sons, Donald Campbell and Tim Campbell; his son-in-law, Dale Clontz; his sisters, Anita McCarver and Wanda Plyler; and his brother, Mike Witmore. He also leaves behind countless family members and friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.

A military memorial service honoring David's life and faithful service to his country will be held at a later date.
