Carolyn was born on August 21, 1943, in Columbia, South Carolina to Frances Pope Mitchell and Arthur Bruce Hallman. She graduated from Batesburg Leesville High School in 1961 and Spartanburg Junior College in 1963, where she was a member of the Glee Club, participated in drama presentations, and enjoyed going to dances with friends. At a dance in Columbia, she met John Miller Hunt. They began dating and were married in 1967. She worked as a secretary and office manager for companies such as Bell South until she and John opened their business, the Hunt Agency, where she managed the office and kept everything running smoothly until their retirement.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Deana Rheney and Lewis Monroe Mitchell, Glennie Elisa Jane Little and James Walker Hallman, her parents Frances and Arthur, her brother Arthur Bruce Hallman, Jr. and his wife Anaith Hallman, her uncle Dr. James Rheney and his wife Eileen Hawkins Mitchell, her uncle Lewis Monroe Mitchell, Jr., her aunts Elizabeth Mitchell Long, Bernice E. Hallman, Lillian Boyce Hallman, and Martha Mitchell Montgomery, and her cousin Julia Shealy.
Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years, John, her daughters Heather Hunt and Amy Hunt Callahan, her son-in law Ian Callahan, her grandchildren Sophia Hague, Ren Callahan, and Echo Callahan, and her niece Hadassah Hallman. She is also survived by her many cousins, who were among her dearest and lifelong friends.
Carolyn was best known for her wonderful sense of humor, her ability to make order out of chaos, and her willingness to help anyone in need. Her heart and her home were always open to any friend who needed a meal, a place to stay, or a hug. A devoted mother, she never missed a chance to be present for her daughters and always championed them in their pursuit of the arts and sciences. A great lover of plants and animals alike (except for snakes), she went through life appreciating and supporting the natural world around her. Her memory will live on in her children and grandchildren through the skills that she taught them, the love of art and music that she fostered, and the joy that comes with making the world a little more kind and beautiful.
A celebration of her life will take place at Dunbar Devine Street Chapel in Columbia, SC on July 11th at 12:00. Donations may be made in her name to The National Audubon Society or any of their local chapters such as the Hilton Head Audubon Society, Audubon South Carolina, or Audubon North Carolina, in lieu of flowers.
