
Newt was born on January 21, 1940, in Petersburg, IL, the oldest of five children to E. N. Reed and Rosie Huckabey Reed. His childhood was spent in Memphis, TN, and his teen years in Elmhurst, IL where he met his wife, Diane.
In 1963, Newt enlisted in the Army Reserves and served in the military until 1969. Newt had a successful professional career in sales. His real passion and fulfillment came from a creative spirit that motivated him to learn new skills and continually challenge himself. Along with his loving wife of 62 years, he led a lifelong journey of creating homes for his family, pursuing in depth the art of photography and music. He became a skilled woodworker in his retirement. His creative spirit was boundless, fueled by his imagination and inventiveness. Family, friends, and neighbors all benefited from these endeavors. He instilled in his two sons a lifelong passion to pursue a creative life.
Newt is survived by his wife, Diane Barmantje Reed; two sons, David Reed of Roanoke, VA, Michael (Heidi), granddaughters, Carrigan and Kennedy of Nolensville, TN; a brother, James Reed (Carole) of Gulfshores, AL; a sister, Rosemary Korinke of Larkspur, CO and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life is planned for Spring, 2026.
