March 19, 1930 – April 20, 2025
Hazel Marie Smith Allen, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. A woman of warmth, faith, and boundless generosity, Hazel lived her life with joy, purpose, and a heart that knew no limits.
Born in 1930, Hazel’s life was a testament to devotion—to her family, her faith, and her deep curiosity about the world. She began her professional journey as a bank teller and later worked as a cataloger at Davidson College Library, helping support her beloved husband, Dolph, through college. She went on to serve as secretary to the President of Edison College and eventually found her calling as a travel agent—a career that perfectly suited her adventurous spirit.
Hazel’s love for travel was legendary. She sailed on over 100 cruises, often accompanied by her dear friends, collecting memories and laughter in every port. Yet no matter where she roamed, her heart was always anchored in her family and her faith. As a preacher’s wife, Sunday school teacher, and a faithful member of the church choir, Hazel’s joyful presence uplifted everyone around her.
A lifelong learner, Hazel was an avid reader who treasured quiet hours with a good book. She adored her pets, especially her cats, and in her later years, she found peace and wonder in bird watching—delighting in the beauty of nature just outside her window.
Her infectious smile and bright laugh could light up any room. Hazel’s kindness knew no bounds—she loved fiercely and gave freely, always willing to offer her last penny to a loved one in need. Her family was her pride and joy, and she nurtured them with unshakable support and unconditional love.
Hazel is survived by her children: John Mark Allen (Dana), Todd Andrew Allen, and Susan Lanie Allen Donnelly (Tom); her grandchildren: Kevin Donnelly, Janine Donnelly Richards (Rob), Jared Allen, Jacob Allen (Adrienne), Conner Allen (Emily), Hannah Allen Nader (Thomas), Luke Donnelly, Shane Allen, and Chayse Allen; and her great-grandchildren: William Richards, Hunter Richards, Solomon Richards, Isla Richards, Michael Nader, and Bryson Allen.
Hazel's life was full—of laughter, music, books, animals, travel, and above all, love. Her legacy lives on in the lives of those she cherished and touched. She will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
A celebration of Hazel’s remarkable life will be held at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC on Friday, May 23rd at 10am.
