Harry Robert “Bob” Hyde, age 72, of Brentwood, Tennessee, departed this life on Friday, June 2, 2023. He was born on June 18, 1950, in Shelbyville, Tennessee to the late Charles Winford Hyde and Gloria Ann (Collins) Hyde. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Michael “Mike” Hyde, and other beloved friends and family members.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Hannah Hyde of London, UK and Ashley Hyde of Brentwood, Tennessee; brother, Donald (Tama) Hyde of Smyrna, Tennessee; sister, Tonya (Brian) Hyde Allen of Tullahoma, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Linda Hyde, Murfreesboro, Tennessee; aunt, Jean Hyde of Estill Springs, Tennessee and a host of nieces and nephews.
Bob grew up in Tullahoma, Tennessee and previously lived in Houston, Texas, and Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Houston.
Bob had a long association with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans franchise that spanned over multiple decades. He joined the then Houston Oilers as a public relations college intern in August 1977. He was hired as Assistant Public Relations Director in 1978 and was then Media Relations Director where he worked closely with late owner K.S. "Bud" Adams.
He left in 1986 and went on to hold positions at Dye, Van Mol & Lawrence Public Relations, the NFL-owned World Football League, and the PGA Golf Tour.
The Oilers moved to Tennessee to become the Titans in 1997 and Bob was close behind, rejoining the team in 1998 as Vice President of Community Relations until he retired in 2014.
Many within the Titans family refer to Bob as "Mr. Oiler," and his loyalty and devotion to the Titans Organization and its players was evident. A proud Tennessean, he was part of the team's transition from Houston to Nashville and expanded the reach of the Titans through a variety of initiatives that impacted the region, including the Titans Caravan, Titans Golf Tournament, youth football, and fostering a relationship with Fort Campbell and numerous non-profit organizations.
In more recent years, Bob has handled special projects for Amy Adams Strunk, current controlling owner of the Titans, including work with Oilers alumni.
Throughout his career and after he retired, Bob remained passionate about making a positive impact for numerous communities. He was co-founder and secretary of the American Mobility Project, which worked to enhance the lives of individuals living with disabilities. He was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, Middle Tennessee Chapter of National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, and Simmons Bank Open benefitting the Snedeker Foundation, a PGA Tour event. He was also involved in numerous other charity programs and events.
Beyond his career and community impact, he was a beloved father, brother, and uncle. He loved bringing his family together and telling stories over good food and his ever-present can of Diet Dr. Pepper. He enjoyed Nashville’s live music scene and the sounds of the Eagles and Tina Turner. He loved picking up kolaches for breakfast every weekend to remind him of his time in Texas. He would listen to any problem you had and offer advice or try to help you fix it. He had the ability to make you feel like a friend whether you knew him for a single day or your entire lifetime.
It is impossible to sum up a man and father like Bob Hyde in so few words, but if we went on too long, we know he would tell us to edit it again.
