Aug. 16, 1950- May 6, 2026
Randal Dee Hughes, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away on May 6, 2026, at the age of 75, at his home with his beloved wife Heather by his side, from complications due to pulmonary fibrosis.
Randy was born on Aug. 16,1950 in Malad, Idaho, the second of three children born to Leanord and Maurine Hughes. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he enjoyed baseball and played the trumpet in the marching band throughout his school years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and brother. Randy participated in the Boy Scout organization and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He spent a great deal of time as a scout leader in his adult years. He graduated from Malad High School and later served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada Ontario-Quebec Mission.
Following his missionary service, he married Heather Ann Sumbler on October 24, 1972, in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple. They celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Randy served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman from 1972 to1976, stationed in San Diego, California. He later attended Idaho State University, where he earned a degree in electronics. Randy’s career took him and his family across the country, turning many moves into family vacations that gave their children the chance to see much of the country.
Known for his kindness, happiness and positive outlook, Randy had a quick wit and friendly demeanor. He loved watching and taking part in sports, especially church leagues such as men’s softball. He developed a passion for cycling and enjoyed cooking, often creating his own recipes; his homemade pizza was a family favorite. Randy also pursued many hobbies over the years, including collecting baseball cards and stamps, photography, leather stamping, and a fondness for his mini car collection. He would often gift his grandkids Matchbox cars whenever he saw them.
Randy dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He and Heather are the parents of eight children. Randy’s fourth child, Rebekka, passed away at seven months old, and the family finds solace in the belief that he has since shared a joyful reunion with her. Sixteen grandchildren joined the family throughout the years, the last of whom was born just a week after his passing. He was excited for her arrival and hoping to make it until her birth so he could meet his third granddaughter. He would tell his family often that he loved them and was proud of them.
Randy was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebekka Hughes, father, Leanord Hughes, mother, Maurine Hughes West, and stepfather, David West.
Randy is survived by his wife, Heather Hughes, children, Tami Black (Kurt), Kristoffer Hughes, David Hughes (Maria), Jeremiah Hughes (Sandra), Sara McCary (Michael), Mellisa Hughes, Zoeann Roberts (Andrew), grandchildren, Jackson, Nathan, Collin, Alexis, Zanden, Bricyn, Brooklyn, Joseph, Dylan, Harlan, Connor, Riley, William, Oliver, Levi, Willow, and siblings, Ken Hughes (Kathie) and Fayrine Thomas (Ned).
The family wishes to thank Shawn Allen, PA-C with Saint Alphonsus Pulmonary for his excellent care and kindness to Randy throughout the past several years, as well as the hospice nurses and staff, particularly David and Tracey, who cared for him in his final weeks. The family encourages all to perform an act of kindness for someone today in Randy’s honor.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30 at 4:00 PM at the Nampa 37th Ward building, located at 607 West Locust Lane, Nampa, ID. Visitation with the family will begin at 3:00 PM.
