Jane Anne Warkentin

She was born on November 22, 1929, in Lake County, Ohio on Townline Road, to the late Anna and Arthur Kubach. The youngest of five siblings, she grew up on her family’s fruit and vegetable farm. She attended Madison High School, where she played volleyball, and was voted Class President.

Jane Anne graduated from Ohio University in 1951 with an honors degree in Home Economics. After graduation, she taught home economics in Oak Harbor, Washington, and later worked for the Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland. She continued her education at Cornell University, earning a Master’s in Home Economics in 1956.

It was at Cornell that Jane Anne met her future husband, Benno Warkentin, who was studying for his PhD in Agriculture. They were married on June 11, 1956, at Sage Chapel on the Cornell campus, the same day as Benno received his PhD.

The newlyweds traveled to England to begin their life together. Benno had a post-doctorate position at Oxford University, and they lived in the picturesque village of Iffley.

Upon return from England, Benno joined the faculty at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The couple settled in Beaconsfield, where they raised a family of three children: Paul, Karen, and Jane.

In 1978 the family moved to Corvallis, Oregon where Benno taught at Oregon State University. During her time in Corvallis, Jane Anne became a dedicated watercolor artist and often painted the beautiful barns and rolling hills of the Willamette Valley. She won several awards for her paintings and was a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. Jane Anne worked for Hewlett-Packard for five years, volunteered at the OSU Thrift Shop and The Arts Center, and was a proud member of the local chapter of AAUW (American Association of University Women).

She is survived by her three children, and seven grandchildren: Sarah, Kat, Olivia, Zoe, Hannah, Milo, and Lucy. She was preceded in death by her husband and her siblings.
