Bill was born on May 10, 1948, in Knoxville, Tennessee. A proud veteran, he honorably served his country in Vietnam. During his military service, he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded while courageously rescuing a downed pilot.
Following his service, Bill earned a degree in Vocational Education and dedicated much of his life to teaching and mentoring others. In 1985, he and his beloved wife, Lindy, relocated from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Georgia, where he built a meaningful career as an educator, basketball coach, and swimming instructor. Through his work with local youth, Bill positively impacted countless lives, teaching not only athletic skills but also character, discipline, and perseverance.
A devoted Christian, Bill was known for his deep faith, remarkable singing voice, and lifelong love of gospel music. A self-taught pianist, he had a unique gift for bringing people together through music. Whenever he encountered a piano, he could captivate an entire room with his talent and passion. His infectious laugh, quick wit, and playful sense of humor brought joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him. Bill never missed an opportunity to share a joke, tell a story, or make those around him smile.
Bill’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Lindy Boatman; his sons, William “Bill” Boatman, Jr., Michael Boatman and wife Angie, and Rob Boatman and wife Tricia; and his cherished grandchildren, Rosie Boatman, Riley Groover, Dawson Boatman, Reagan Boatman, Britton Boatman, Elizabeth Boatman, Emberly Boatman, Addy Boatman, and Emmy Boatman.
Bill’s legacy of faith, service, music, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, former students, and all who were blessed to know him.
In accordance with his wishes, Bill will be cremated. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
