Dail Dean Gibbs of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, at the age of 97, surrounded by family in Birmingham, Alabama. Born on April 4, 1929, in Rector, Arkansas, to Ernest and Leona Gibbs, Dail lived a long, full, and meaningful life defined by hard work, humor, determination, and devotion to family and friends.
He leaves behind his children John Gibbs, Jeff (Debbie) Gibbs, and Julie Lyons (David); grandchildren Lindsey Ketchum (Kent), Layken Rubin (Braden), Laura McClinton (Jacob), and Logan Gibbs (Celeste); and great grandchildren Harper and Knox Ketchum, Harrison and Hollyn Rubin, Will McClinton, and Linlee Gibbs as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Mitchell Gibbs.
Dail grew up in Rector alongside his sister, Virginia Gibbs Linam, and brothers Orvil, Basil, and Donald. His childhood in rural Arkansas shaped his values, work ethic, and determination. It was there he discovered his love of sports and learning—and his lifelong motivation to succeed, inspired by a desire to never pick cotton again.
Dail proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948, stationed in Oregon. After his service, he earned his degree from Murray State University, where he met Jeanette Mitchell, the mother of his four children.
Dail began his career as the basketball coach at Steeleville Community High School in Illinois (1953-1957), leading the team to an impressive 83–23 record and two district championships over four seasons. While coaching, he completed his MBA, and although his coaching career was brief, it remained one of his fondest memories.
Post coaching, he began his business career with South Dakota Rural Electric Association and served as their General State-Wide Manager from 1960 to 1966. In 1966, he was hired as the Executive Statewide Manager of the Alabama Rural Electric Association, prompting a move to Wetumpka, Alabama. Over the next 25 years, Dail became a respected leader and a “colorful character” within the organization until his retirement in 1991.
He will be laid to rest at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector, Arkansas. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Dail and Mitchell Gibbs to Dakota Milestones, a private nonprofit organization supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, at Dakota Milestones, Box 248, Chamberlain, SD 57325
