She was born in 1936 and raised in Chicago, IL. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and started teaching even before finishing college. Pat initiated her love of travel with three years teaching for the US Overseas Dependent Schools in Germany and Turkiye. It was during this time she met and married Archie. When they came back to the states, they eventually settled in Novato where Pat continued her teaching career for 20 years at Novato’s Lu Sutton School. Her passion for teaching was recognized when she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1986, a testament to her commitment to education and her students.
Pat’s many interests included crafting, quilting, and playing bridge. A talented trip organizer, she loved exploring the world and bringing people together. From cross-country family camping trips to vacations with her grandchildren and reunions with friends around the world, Pat was always enthusiastically planning the next gathering for those she loved. She selflessly volunteered with many service organizations, notably giving her time to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, curiosity, and the joy she found in connecting with the people around her.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Patton.
She is survived by her children, Anne Oertli (Tom Oertli), Beth Bloom, and David Patton (Aunna Oh); her grandchildren, Jessica Bloom, Naomi Patton, Emily Soto, Greg Oertli, and Alyssa Oertli; and her great-granddaughter, Delilah Soto.
We express our deepest appreciation to the caregivers at Sunrise of San Mateo who provided comfort and support to Pat during these last few years.
Pat’s legacy lives on through her family, her former students, and everyone whose life she touched with her kindness and generosity of spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Novato on Friday, August 14 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a local food bank or a local St Vincent de Paul Chapter.
