Son of the late Dr. John Buchanan Barrett and Delphine Sullivan Barrett of Cleveland, OH he was born in New Castle, PA on August 18, 1940. His early years were spent in Tudor City District of New York City as his father was assigned as a Senior Surgeon on the US Transport Shawnee during World War II.
He relocated with his family after the war back to Cleveland, OH. He attended high school at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH earning a diploma in 1958. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Providence College, Providence RI in 1962.
Michael graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island class of 1964. Michael was an Officer of United States Naval Patrol Squadron 19 based out of NAS Cubi Point, Philippines. NAS Cubi Point served as the primary maintenance, repair and supply center for the 400 carrier-based aircraft of the Seventh Fleet’s carrier force.
Upon completion of his service in the US Navy, he relocated to San Francisco, CA where he spent the remainder of his life.
During the 1970s, Michael opened Barrett’s Pub on Battery St. in San Francisco. It was famed for its lively atmosphere and livelier clientele. Unfortunately, after a number of years, Barrett’s pub was forced to close.
Michael remained an active member in the San Francisco community and was a former member of the Olympic Club where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow members, its sporting facilities and hosting friends and family for dining and drinks. He was involved in many alumni organizations and was a beloved member of the Harkins Society at Providence College.
Michael remained close to the San Francisco bar and restaurant scene and picked up bartending shifts at Little City in North Beach. It was during this period when he launched his company Splash Beverages Concentrates. A true visionary, he developed flavored additives for alcoholic beverages that are comparable to today’s many flavored-infused spirits and other flavored alcoholic beverages.
Michael was able to build his dream home in Bodega Bay, CA where he enjoyed hosting friends and family at his retreat by the sea. Ever looking to be involved, hel became manager of the Bodega Harbor restaurant for a number of years.
He is predeceased by his parents, his older sisters, Delphine Barrett of Cleveland, OH, Sheila Conlin of New Providence, NJ. He is also predeceased by his niece Kitty Conlin Lobo of Summit, NJ.
He is survived by his niece Patricia Conlin of Bay Head, NJ, and his niece Molly Tucker and her husband Lin and their children Charlie, Barbara and Martha of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his long-time dear friends, Robert Kerrigan and Susan Stokeld of San Francisco, CA who both devoted much time and care in helping and providing for Michael during the difficult remainder of his life.
