On August 13, John Musgrave, long-time resident of Belmont, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. During his time at Stanford, where he earned a BS in Mathematics and a Master’s in Education, John met his future wife, Diane. John taught math for 34 years in Palo Alto, first at Terman Junior High and later at Gunn High School. In his leisure time, John loved reading, listening to music, walking a succession of beloved dogs, and attending theater, symphony, and opera performances. His favorite activity of all, though, was performing in community theater. He appeared on the stages of many local groups, including Foothill Musical Theater, Palo Alto Players, Pacifica Spindrift Players, Hillbarn, Theaterworks, the Pear, and Broadway by the Bay/ PCLO. Audience members will recall John’s performances as Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady, Mayor Shinn in Music Man, Captain Andy in Showboat, and many others. He leaves behind Diane, his wife of almost 58 years; his children Tom (Beth) and Elaine (Michael) and grandchildren Kate and Ella; his loving sister-in-law Marilyn; his “Little Sis” Carol Harlig; Diane’s cousin Dunja; Tom and Elaine’s “Auntie” Barbara Dale; his loyal golden retriever Tristan; and many devoted and supportive friends. The family is especially grateful to caregivers Faye and Roy, who cared for John so lovingly in his last days. The family thanks you for your support and kindness over the years, especially during this past year of John’s illness. Plans for a celebration of John’s life are ongoing.
In light of his love of acting in community theater, please consider supporting your local theater groups in John’s memory.
