William (Bill) Kevin Flynn was born on September 15, 1950, in Portland, Oregon. Bill passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham, Washington, from congestive heart failure.
Bill was the first of four sons to William Jackson Flynn and Dorothy Jean McDermott. In early 1960, his father and brothers moved to Hawaii, where Bill attended the prestigious Punahou School in Honolulu. A later move saw Bill graduate from Chatsworth High School near Los Angeles in 1968.
Bill was a bright boy and took an early interest in electronics and aviation, especially remote-control airplanes. As a teen, he operated ham radios and attracted post cards from around the world.
Upon graduating high school, Bill proudly served 6 years in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed mostly in Taiwan. He was a certified aircraft electronic navigation technician and worked on what he called the "hurky mothers" (C130 Hercules transport aircraft) radio equipment. He earned an Honorable Discharge in March of 1976.
Bill worked literally every level of Telecom and was certified in practically every field of it, including most recently as a U.S. Contactor for the military, building siren systems and early warning alert systems for military bases around the world. Bill was a member of the American Legion, small UAS for the FAA, the Academy of American Model Aeronautics and earned his radiotelephone operators license from the FCC in January 1985.
Even though he had a booming and beautiful radio voice, his passion was in how it all worked.
As an electronics engineer, he worked on many broadcast facilities around the country and he worked a few short times in Sun Valley, Idaho where he helped build both KECH and KYZK FM radio stations and where he had family to visit while working.
Bill was a loving and patriarchal brother to his siblings. He was married four times to Lynn, Marilyn, Linda and Arlin. They all shared a common theme in their names which was often mused.
Bill is preceded in death by his mother, father and his brother David Patrick Flynn who passed from an auto accident in 1971.
Surviving family members include his loving Stepmom, his brothers and half-sisters, his nephews and nieces as well as several cousins.
Bill's friends were a big part of his family, too. Bill treasured his friendships having had so many throughout his life.
Memorials and/or contributions can be made to the Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham, WA.
Fly high Bill!
