He was born on April 19, 1942, to Chester and Mabel (Sunbury) Skinner in Los Angeles, California.
Leonard served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1967. During his service, he enjoyed many adventures that he later shared with his family, fondly recalling time spent in places such as Turkey and Germany.
Shortly after his discharge, Leonard met the love of his life, Vicki (Brown) Skinner. After a brief courtship, they were married in December 1967 and shared 58 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two sons, Norman and Jason.
In 1977, the family moved from Los Angeles to Boise, Idaho.
Leonard worked many jobs throughout his life and never hesitated to take on extra work to provide for his family. He retired from Consolidated Freightways, but retirement did not slow him down. He went on to work for the Boise School District as an aid supporting children with special needs, where he formed meaningful bonds with students and colleagues alike.
Still not ready to fully retire, Leonard began working for Alaska Airlines. He started in their Boise office and later transferred to the Seattle area to be closer to his children. Over the years, he held several roles, and the benefits of his work allowed Leonard and Vicki to enjoy many memorable trips together.
Leonard eventually retired for good and moved to Camano Island, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living on an island. He embraced island life and treasured the many friendships he formed there. He was a member of Camano Chapel Church and over the years had been involved at the Camano Senior Center. He enjoyed weekly coffee gatherings with a veterans’ group and participated in BSF Bible Study for many years.
Leonard had a wide range of hobbies that he loved sharing with his family. He was a HAM radio operator for many years and proudly retained his call sign. While living in Idaho, he became a pilot and took his family on many memorable adventures, most notably flights to McCall, ID for blueberry pancakes. He also loved geocaching and Adventure Labs, often turning these pursuits into outings with his children, grandchildren and friends. Camping brought him great joy, as did baking. His family will especially miss his famous cinnamon rolls and peanut butter cookies, which he generously shared with friends and loved ones.
Leonard was a devoted Christian who began each day with Bible study and prayer. He lived his life in service to others, always placing family and friends before himself and offering help whenever it was needed.
Leonard is survived by his beloved wife, Vicki; their sons, Norman (Michelle) Skinner of Kirkland, Washington, and Jason (Monica) Skinner of Bremen, Germany; and his grandchildren, Evan, Oliver, Martine, and Nathan Skinner. He is also survived by his in-laws, Wayne McCloure, Michael Brown, Becky and Harold Bobo, and Michelle and James Reed, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Skinner and Mabel Skinner; his stepmother, Kitty Skinner; his sister, Charlene McCloure; and his sister-in-law, Linda Brown.
A memorial service to honor Leonard’s life will be on Thursday, 7/2/26 at 1pm:
