Carey was born on May 31, 1933, in Nashville, TN, to LeRoy and Lala (Mullins) Moore, and raised in Dallas, TX. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Southern Methodist University in 1954, a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1963, and a Master of Library Science from the University of North Texas in 1997.
After graduating from SMU, Carey was commissioned in the United States Air Force, where he trained as a pilot and served on active duty and in the reserves, attaining the rank of Captain. Following seminary, he briefly pastored Olivet Southern Baptist Church in Lancaster, California.
In his personal life, Carey married Linda Ann Banks in 1962. Together they welcomed four children and endeavored to build a family grounded in faith and love. Professionally, Carey's passion lay in writing and editing. He contributed to numerous organizations including The Billy Graham Evangelic Association, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Logos International Fellowship, Fleming H. Revell, Doubleday & Co., and Word, Inc. Finally, he served as Serials and Reference Librarian at Dallas Baptist University. Notably, he authored and published three volumes of The Evangelical Sunday School Teacher’s Guide with Word from 1982 to 1985.
In 1986, Carey married Pamela Rosewell Moore, a renowned author and speaker who had served as companion to Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom. They met in Waco, TX, and their friendship blossomed into a devoted partnership rooted in shared faith. Together, they coauthored If Two Shall Agree: Praying Together as a Couple (1992), drawing from their experiences and those of other couples to inspire marital prayer and intimacy. Carey and Pam founded Pam Rosewell Moore Ministries, a nonprofit supporting her speaking and writing, and served on staff at Dallas Baptist University for several years. Longtime residents of Red Oak and Waxahachie, TX (where they moved in 1998), they enjoyed a rich life together, filled with ministry, travel, and quiet joys.
Throughout his life, Carey sought to serve his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through dedicated study, evangelism, missionary support, speaking, teaching, writing, and discipleship. In his later years, he cherished traveling, gardening, time at home with their dogs, fellowship with dear friends, and serving in their local church.
Carey is survived by his beloved brother, LeRoy Moore; his children from his marriage to Linda—Jonathan Moore, James Moore, Stephanie Moore, and Kathryn (Moore) McLellan; and his grandchildren, Dylan Van Savage, Zoe Van Savage, and Emily Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Nannie (Gibson) Moore; first wife, Linda (Banks) Moore; second wife, Pamela (Rosewell) Moore (who passed in 2023); and sisters, Louise (Moore) Knoohuizen, Francis (Moore) Porter, Marjorie (Moore) Watson, and Nancy (Moore) Mapes.
