Where does one even begin to put words to such an incredible soul? Thomas Edward Downtain III, known to many as Ion Mot, Daisy Mot, Electra Texan, and other creative monikers, was a radiant, loving force in this world. A gifted artist, performer, and deeply spiritual soul, he lived a life overflowing with love, connection, and inspiration.
Born on January 23, 1961, in Dallas, Texas, to Thomas Edward Downtain II and Mary Jane (Watkins) Downtain, Tom was raised in Dallas before becoming a cherished part of both the Dallas and Austin creative communities. For the past 38 years, he called Austin home, leaving an unforgettable impact on everyone he met.
Ion was a visionary artist, embracing creativity in all forms—painting, music, film, sculpture, writing, live performances, costume and set design. His bestselling mandala coloring books inspired countless people, encouraging them to find peace and self-expression through art. In addition to his books, he was known for his vibrant mandala paintings, thought-provoking wood sculptures, and expressive apparel designs, all of which reflected his boundless imagination and deep spiritual connection. He lived by the belief that “Humanity needs your inspiration and imagination,” and he embodied that truth every day.
For more than two and a half decades, Daisy Mot was a beloved presence at Kerbey Lane Café on South Lamar, where his warmth, kindness, and infectious energy made every encounter special. His reach extended into Austin’s artist and performer circles, recovery communities, church multi-media and video production teams, and beyond. He touched lives with his deep personal connections, always uplifting and grateful, making friends from all walks of life.
Zilker Park and the healing waters of Barton Springs were among his greatest joys, where he found solace and connection with nature, often spending time there several days a week. His spiritual journey was at the heart of his life, maintaining an intimate relationship with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, which shone through in the love he poured into the world.
Ion Mot is survived by his father, Thomas Edward Downtain II; sister Terre Brown & husband Steve; brother David Downtain & wife Tracey; his cherished nieces and nephews Phillip, Jenny, David, Zach, Daniel, Josh, Danielle, and a bonus nephew, Brady; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Though he had no wife or children, his family was vast—made up of the many souls he touched and inspired.
