surrounded by family. He was ninety-five.
Born in Manhattan, New York on July 31, 1928, to Thomas Kirwan and Katherine
Corcoran, he grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and Winchester, Massachusetts,
and graduated from Winchester High School. He earned an Architecture degree
from the University of Pennsylvania where he captained the cross country and
track teams. He was a member of Penn’s Sigma Nu fraternity and Friars Senior
Society. In 1950, the National Collegiate Track Coaches of America recognized him
as an All-American miler and he qualified to become a member of the U.S.
National track team.
After starting United States Air Force flight training in Bartow, Florida, he was
reassigned to compete in the 1952 United States Olympic trials on the USAF track
team.
Following his military service, he launched a successful 38-year career in
commercial architectural aluminum manufacturing. He progressed from
draftsperson, sales manager, product manager, European marketing director (in
Germany) and completed his career as corporate long-range planning manager.
Tom is survived by his wife of 38 years Nancy Page Kirwan, son Thomas Kirwan, III
(Leslie), son David Kirwan (Patricia), daughter Amy Langston (Gary), brother Peter
Kirwan, Sr., seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving him
are wife Nancy Kirwan’s daughter-in-law Jeanne Nelson, son Kevin Ray (Trish),
four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his
parents, his sister Marcella Kirwan Morgan, and Nancy Kirwan’s son Patrick Ray.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Austin Community
Foundation (www.austincf.org) for the benefit of The Querencia Residents’
Scholarship Fund for Employees.
The family will celebrate and honor Tom at the next Kirwan family reunion. His
final resting place will be near Rockport, Massachusetts, a favorite family seaside
gathering place for almost one hundred years.
