Tom was born in Paterson, NJ September 19, 1949 to the late Reverend John Albert Hamersma and Mae Esther Hamersma, presently of Whiting NJ. Tom attended Hope College, Michigan State, and Aquinas College in Michigan graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. He received his Master’s Degree in mathematics education from NOVA Southeastern University in Florida.
Tom began his career in business in Michigan. Upon moving to Florida, Tom became a mathematics educator, teaching at Manatee Community College (now State College of Florida) and South Florida State College. He also taught at EC Glass High School in Lynchburg VA. Even after retirement to Austin TX, Tom continued his passion for mathematics education by tutoring students at Austin Community College.
In addition to his mother, Tom is survived by his wife, Paige Snead Hamersma, his stepchildren, Jessi MacDonald of Austin TX and Dustin Barker of Mountain View CA, his two daughters, Heather Egan and Autumn Hamersma of Bradenton FL, and two brothers Edward Hamersma and Steven Hamersma of NJ.
Tom and Paige enjoyed their active life teaching mathematics together for many years until their retirement, and, after retirement, maintaining their vacation business properties, biking, traveling in their RV, tutoring at Austin Community College, and, best of all, spending time with their grandchildren, Willow, Elias, Sage, and Miles.
A memorial service in celebration of Thomas’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday July 24, 2017 at Bannockburn Baptist Church, 7100 Brodie Lane, Austin, Texas 78745. Enter the Worship Center and you will be guided to the third floor.
