Susan was born in Dallas, Texas in Florence Nightingale Hospital on April 24, 1946, to Evelyn Doris Crow Pyeatt and Byron and Benjamin Pyeatt. Sussan graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas and The University of Texas at Austin.
Susan married Thomas E. Thomason in 1969. They lived in Austin until moving to Washington DC in 1970. During her 9 years in DC, Suan was employed by the Veteran’s Administration, Veteran Affairs and the Department of Treasury. After she and Tommy divorced, Susan moved back to Dallas and opened The Mostly Cheese Cottage, a gourmet deli on Greenville Ave.
In 1980 Susan was offered a job with The Department of Veteran Affairs in Austin. She sold the Cheese Shop, moved to Ausitn and resumed her career with the Department.
In 1983, she married Charels W. Attaway, the marriage did not last but she gained a stepdaughter, Stacy Attaway Hitt. They became each other’s chosen family.
In 2000, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer, she retired from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Susan fought and beat cancer. She remained in remission until 2024.
In 2001, Susan married Tom Acklen. They divorced in 2013 but remained the closest of friends. He along with Jeani Smith were by her side when she passed.
Susan led a full life, she was an excellent employee, an adventurous entrepreneur, and an incredible friend to many. Susan’s dogs were a major joy and part of her life. She was an overly caring “pet mom”. After retirement she felt extremely lucky to have discovered canine sports and spent many fun years traveling and participating and competing in Agility and Nosework.
Susan is survived by her sister Nancy Pyeatt Misso of Bullard, Texas, Stacy Attaway Hitt and family of Royse City, Texas, Thomas H. Acklen and family of San Marcos, Texas. She also has a host of friends, neighbors and her beloved dog Lilly.
Preceded in death are her parents, Byron and Evelyn Pyeatt and her brother-in-law, Paul Misso.
If you would like to honor Susan, she requested that you consider a donation to your favorite charity or organization, take a friend to lunch and celebrate life or take your dog for an extra-long walk and give them a little more affection. That is what she would like to be doing.
