Stuart Stevenson Lundie, previously of Hudson, MA passed in peace in Austin, TX on Sunday, September 2, 2019, at the age of 84. Stuart, the youngest of three children, was born on June 29, 1935, to William Vivian Gordon Lundie and Margaret S. Bleecker Lundie in Summit, New Jersey. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Arley MacDonald; and his loving wife of 55 years, Ann Simmons Lundie. When Stuart received his cancer diagnosis, he faced it with his well-known optimism, "It's a win-win for me. Either I beat cancer and get more time here with family and friends, or I get to spend eternity in heaven with your Mom." Family members find comfort in knowing that upon his passing Stuart joined Ann, the love of his life, in heaven on what would have been their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Stuart is survived by his brother, Kenneth Lundie and wife Caryl Marlboro, MA. His three children, Scott Simmons Lundie and wife Dorothy, Susan Lundie Demel and husband Dick, and Catherine Lundie Fleck and his six grandchildren, Tara Lundie Metzger and husband Matt, Alexander Simmons Lundie and wife Kara, Melissa Ann Demel, Jonathan Stuart Demel, Connor Kennan Fleck, Evan Keith Fleck, and great-grandson Paxton Simmons Lundie were his pride and joy. Stuart is also survived by his sister-in-law Sally Rae Stoerr and husband Herbert, and his nieces and nephews, Bruce Lundie and wife Maura, Heidi Sawyer and husband Drew, Eric Stoerr and wife Komal, and Sonja Stoerr.
Stuart was a graduate of St. Bernard's preparatory school in N.J. and attended Penn State before entering the U.S. Navy (1955-1959). He was a recipient of the American Spirit of Honor medal for the display of outstanding qualities of leadership best expressing the American spirit, including honor, initiative, and loyalty. Stuart met the love of his life at the age of 16 on the U.S.S. United States and later married Ann on September 2, 1957, in Adams, MA. He served as an Electronics Technician aboard the U.S.S. Furse DDR 882, a Gearing class destroyer, for two years. Knowing that he did not want to continue to be away from Ann for many months at a time, Stuart served as an Electronics Technician at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, CT. He waited for Ann to graduate nursing school before heading to college. In 1961 he earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tri-State University in Angola, IN and received Naval Aviation Engineering Services Unit training. Stuart and his family moved to several locations on the east coast, including Washington DC, Virginia Beach, VA, Key West, FL, two homes in Wheaton, MD, and Warminster, PA before finally settling in Hudson, MA in 1972. At each residence, Stuart used his craftsmanship to improve the home for his family. He loved his work with dedication to NASA Godard Space Flight Center, Philco-Ford Corporation, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and Lockheed Martin before his retirement in 1999. He was fortunate to maintain lifelong friendships with his work colleagues, wonderful neighbors, and fellow church members and friends in Hudson.
Stuart will be fondly remembered as a man unconditionally devoted to his wife, having a cheerful smile, a welcoming handshake, and hug, and having a positive attitude on life. Stuart was a great family historian and storyteller. His grandchildren gathered like bees on honeycomb to intently listen to each of his tales. He had an appreciation of music, often playing records while spending time in his workshop and his kitchen and car radios never left his favorite classical music station, Boston's WGBH. He was renowned for his woodworking talents and particularly loved to research century pieces and recreate them in his workshop. Stuart was a gardener and gave great attention to his beautifully manicured yard. He loved and served the Lord as a faithful member of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church for 45 years.
A celebration of life service will be at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 5 Washington St. Hudson, MA on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon reception to follow.
