He was born on January 3, 1951 in Killeen, Texas and grew up in Mineral Wells and Weatherford, Texas. Dr. Wilson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Microbiology, and attended Medical School at the U.T. Medical School of Houston. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the University of Utah Medical Center, followed by a pediatric fellowship at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. After completing a stint of military service in the USAF at David Grant Medical Center on Travis AFB in California, Dr. Wilson moved to Conroe, Texas, where he served as the sole neurosurgeon in Montgomery County for several years. After the Children’s Hospital at Brackenridge opened, Dr. Wilson realized his professional dream, moving his family back to Austin to pursue establishing a pediatric neurosurgery practice. When Dr. Wilson felt it was time to pass his pediatric practice along to a younger neurosurgeon, he remained active in the medical community, working to mentor other physicians, and becoming a staff member with the Cyberknife program at Seton Hospital.
Dr. Wilson is preceded in death by his father, Marlyn Charles, and his mother, Marcella Banks Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah, son Christopher, daughter Kate, and his sister Gwen W. Pettit.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cameron Kielhorn and staff, and the Enhabit Home Health and Hospice teams for the care and compassion they showed Ron in his final days.
As per Dr. Wilson’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. Friends and family are invited to observe a moment of silence and then raise a toast to Ron’s life and career as they are so moved.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Dr. Wilson’s honor to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas.
