Robert Lewis Roberts was born on November 1,1931 in Ft. Worth, Texas to Irene Burnet Lewis Roberts and Dr. Albert Dee Roberts. At the age of eight he moved to Dallas, Texas with his mother and her new husband, John R. Moroney. He Attended what is now Saint Marks and Highland Park High School.
After one semester a TCU he attended the University of Texas at Austin graduating with a BA degree then followed by four years at UT School of Dentistry and received his DDS in 1956.
In 1956 he married Billie Jewel Walker and they had three beautiful children.
After graduating he served two years as a Captain at Amarillo Air Force Base as a dental officer where he was briefly the base oral surgeon. He then moved to Austin, Texas where he practiced dentistry for 36 years. A proud achievement and singular honor was the introduction of the first black dentist, Dr. Sydney White, to the Austin District Dental Society.
In1975 he married Betty Marie Sims who assisted him in his dental practice for 27 years and who remained his love for 48 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and tennis player and loved reading history and philosophy.
He was preceded in death by his brothers John R. Moroney and George W. Roberts, and first wife Billie.
He is survived by his wife Betty Marie, brother Dr. Albert D. Roberts and wife Diane, daughter Bonnie and husband Alan Frost, daughter Becky and husband Doug Pickels, and son Sam Roberts and wife Deborah, 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
At his request the will be no formal service and his remains will be cremated. A private service will be held at a later time. Any donation made in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
He enjoyed playing tennis and enjoyed the many friendships he developed over the years. On March 1, 2023 he played his last match and won, and with a great hurrah jumped over the net to the other side.
