Born on December 5, 1929, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Oscar McElhaney and Alice E. Case, Bob was raised by his aunts during the hardships of the Great Depression.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Forces and went on to pursue a long and fulfilling career as a telecommunications technician and instructor with the Federal Aviation Administration. His work contributed to numerous FAA projects that helped shape aviation infrastructure in Central Texas.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Bob was passionate about sailing, playing the piano, cooking, and traveling to the Texas Gulf Coast. He spent over 20 years sailing Lake Travis aboard his cherished sail boat, All Hours II, where he joyfully entertained family and friends. A talented home chef, Bob had a particular love for French cuisine and often showcased his culinary skills during memorable dinner parties hosted with his beloved wife, Edra.
Bob married the love of his life, Edra Zoe Ayers (née Austin), and they shared more than 37 wonderful years together. He is survived by Edra; his daughters, Dr. Alice Johnson and Laura Smith; his son, Robert F. McElhaney, Jr.; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced by the family.
Bob’s life was a testament to humility, humor, and boundless generosity. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
