On March 5, 2023, Peggy Jo Huston Lechtenberger went home to be with Jesus and all the loved ones who preceded her in death at the age of 89. Peggy was a wonderful loving, yet strong woman. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to many throughout her lifetime. Peggy was born on December 22, 1933, in Vernon, Texas. She grew up mostly in Oklahoma, predominately in El Reno. She graduated from El Reno High School in 1952 and had many fond memories of her classmates and teachers. She attended many class reunions and kept in touch with several of her classmates throughout her lifetime.
Peggy met and married William Joseph Lechtenberger on September 27, 1953. They were married for twenty-eight years, had three children before “Bill” went home to heaven in 1981. Bill was a stockbroker and she was a middle school teacher during their years living in Houston.
Peggy graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and became a junior high school Language Arts teacher at Lamar Consolidated Schools where she taught students who were “at risk” for eleven years. She made many friends with the teachers and students over the years. In fact, she actually took some of her students, and her children to see Marvin Gaye back in the day as music was an important part of her life! She also took her sons to the dances at her school, in spite of their protests! She wanted to inspire and nurture young people to become the best of whatever they chose as their life’s plan. This included modeling for her children that each individual was a precious gift from God and needed to be treated with respect and dignity.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, DeAnn, and her two sons, William Douglas and his wife Brenda, and Joseph Dean and his wife Julie. “MeMa” had four granddaughters: Haley. Kara, Leah, and Mikaela. She was a great-grandmother to Julie Kaye and Joseph. “MeMa Bo”,“MeMa”, MeMama, or Aunt Peggy will be greatly missed by all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews of which she was so very proud.
Mom requested to be cremated and have a private family graveside gathering at the Frisco Cemetery in Oklahoma where our dad and other Lechtenberger family members are buried. In lieu of flowers, we would request donations be made to Tunnel to Towers, Wounded Warriors, Samaritan’s Purse, or St Jude Hospital. These were the charities that she was supporting during her lifetime.
