She grew up in Midland and graduated from Midland High School. She attended The University of Texas at Austin, where she studied English and Plan II. It was there that she met Robert B. Cox, then a law student. They fell in love and married. Nancy and Bob moved to Odessa, where they raised their two children, Melinda and Glenn. Nancy was active in the Junior League and gave generously of her time to local charities. Odessa was their home until 1986, when the family moved to Austin to be closer to work and longtime friends.
Nancy was direct, fiercely honest, and rarely burdened by the need for a filter. You generally knew where you stood with her. She had strong opinions, was willing to share them, and had little interest in pretending otherwise. But there was another side to Nancy, and her grandchildren knew it well. She loved them deeply. At the family cabin in Calf Canyon, New Mexico, she would sit for hours holding them when they were small.
Calf Canyon was the place Nancy loved more than anywhere else. After retirement, she and Bob spent much of each year at the cabin until his death. Nancy loved the mountains, the cabin, and the small community around them. And, in characteristic fashion, she did her part to keep the residents of the canyon “in order.”
Bob was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 just before Nancy and Bob moved to Querencia, where they made their home in Independent Living. They were wonderfully happy there. Bob died in 2012.
Nancy remained at Querencia for many years. She enjoyed a close circle of friends and came to know and love the people who cared for her there. She especially looked forward to visits from her family and grandchildren.
In January 2026, Nancy moved to the Plaza at Querencia, where she spent the final months of her life. She died on October 11, 2026, at the age of 87.
She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Cox White and her husband, Scott White, and their sons, Preston and Carson; and by her son, Glenn Forman Cox and his wife, Shawnna Cox, and their sons, Thomas and Charlie.
Near the end of her life, Nancy often spoke of what a wonderful life she had been given. She considered herself blessed by her family, by her friends, and by the many people who had been part of her life. She was ready to see Bob again. And she looked forward to being reunited with her parents and with the many friends who had gone before her.
