Monty was a proud 5th generation Texan born on August 10, 1940 in Austin, Texas. His great-great-grandfather Thomas H. Walden settled on Bull Creek in 1848. Monty grew up in Travis Heights and graduated from William B. Travis High School, class of 1958. He served with the Army in Vietnam from 1966-1967 as a gunner and aircraft powertrain repairman with the 114th Aviation Company Knights of the Air. Monty worked most of his life as a salesman. He started selling ladies shoes at Buttrey’s on Congress Avenue in Austin and then moved to Big Town Mall in Dallas. He then sold used cars in Garland. Monty went on to work in Austin for Lone Star Beer in the late 1960s through the mid 1980s selling draught beer which was later bought by Centex Beverage Inc. where he retired in 2005. Monty resided in Jarrell starting in 1978 and finally moved to his paradise on the Pedernales in 2016.
Monty will be remembered for his love of his family, friends, boat rides, being outdoors, animals, sunsets, sports, motorcycles, cheese enchiladas, fried shrimp, Blue Bell ice cream, beer, and bourbon.
Monty was preceded in death by his brothers Gary Wayne Gage, Neal Munson, mother Edna “Pat” Munson, and father James Reagan Gage.
Left behind to mourn are his wife Frances Gage, children Elaine and husband Champ Gatlin, Johnny Gage, Carolyn and husband Scott Chaffin, Linda Gage, Amanda Gage, Reagan and wife Rose Gage, three grandsons, six granddaughters, and eight great-granddaughters.
Monty’s Celebration of Life will be on September 30, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Spicewood Vineyards, 1419 Co Rd 409, Spicewood, Texas 78669.
