Mary Evelyn Maxwell, 78, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026 in Austin, Texas, with her loved ones by her side. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and partner, with many friends who greatly enjoyed their time with her.
Mary Evelyn was born on August 28. 1947 in Waco, Texas to Jeannette and Thomas Maxwell Sr. As the youngest of three children, she was fiercely protected – and sometimes teased- by her two older brothers. She began her lifelong attachment to dogs as a small child.
After graduating from Richfield High School and studying at Baylor University, she married and welcomed her cherished daughter Katherine Elizabeth (Katy) who she raised as a single mother. Katy’s graduation from Texas A&M University was a special point of pride for Mary Evelyn as she followed in the Maxwell tradition of Aggie grads.
Mary Evelyn’s work with the Texas Attorney General Child Support Unit gave her immense satisfaction. When warring parents tried to win her support, she and her colleagues reminded them that they were only focused on the children’s wellbeing.
Later in life, Mary Evelyn met and married her life partner Margot Massey, who survives her. She is also survived by her daughter Katy (and spouse Blake Jamail), her amazing grandchildren Caroline and Jonathan, her older brother Thomas Maxwell Jr., five nephews, and a host of loving friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother James.
In accordance with her wishes, she will be buried alongside her parents.
