Martha Jane Schumacher

She was born on July 7th, 1932 in Roanoke, VA to Edgar Pedigo Howard and Kathryn Eagle Howard (nee Wilson).

Martha graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in nutrition. She married John Schumacher in 1956 and they had three children; David, Kathryn and Nancy. They lived in New Jersey, Park Ridge, IL, and Houston, where Martha was a Real Estate agent and homemaker.

Martha lived the last 25 years in Austin, where she was active in Democratic politics, the Friendship Force, and the Austin Computer Club. She was a very enthusiastic supporter of Celtic music, symphony, all things Canada, and worldwide travel. She never met a stranger and never lacked an opinion!

Martha is survived by her son David, his wife Julie, their children Ian, Sydney and Kylen; her daughter Kathryn Welsh, her husband Joe, their children Russell Burdick, Michael and Audrey; her daughter Nancy Galvan, her husband Hector, their children Alexandria Carter (married to Ty Carter) and Isabella; and her ex-husband John.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Austin at 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Austin, TX 78759. The family would like to express their gratitude towards Hospice Austin and the care and assistance they provided to make Martha’s last days as peaceful and comfortable as possible.
