Lois Lane Nance was a friend in the richest sense of the word. She nurtured relationships made throughout her 96 years, never losing touch with those she loved from childhood, college, and her work life. Friends made at the Llano Art Gallery, Line Dancing and especially the Lake Buchanan Arts & Crafts Gallery were like family. She will be remembered as an artist, an avid card player (who was hard to beat), her love of animals, and mostly for her caring and sense of humor in challenging times.
Lois was born September 22, 1926, in Jerome, Arizona, when it was still a producing mining town. She was the daughter of Haydee and Ruth Lane. As a child she spent lots of time in Page Springs, Arizona with her grandmother and cousin. Her step-grandfather started the Page Springs Fish Hatchery. Her family moved from Jerome to Flagstaff where she graduated from high school. After high school she attended and graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Biology. She was a member of Tri Delta sorority. After college Lois moved to Minneapolis to work as a phlebotomist. She returned to Arizona and married Wilbur “Bill” Cameron in 1950. Together they ran the Verde Independent Newspaper until they divorced in 1969.
In 1970 Lois married Ken Nance, a construction superintendent with Kerr-McGee. They followed Ken’s job to El Paso, TX, where she went to work as a phlebotomist at Fort Bliss Hospital. In 1977 Lois and Ken purchased the Edgewater Resort on Lake Buchanan. They ran the resort until 1983. She continued to live at Lake Buchanan until 2022.
Lois was always artsy. However, her artistic talents didn’t fully bloom until later in life. She began painting in 1982 and much of her paintings were western and native American themed based on being raised in Arizona and her father being a real cowboy. Her work can be seen in a number of restaurants and galleries in the Highland Lakes area. In addition to painting, she made beautiful beaded earrings.
Lois died on October 7, 2022. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Cameron of Chandler, AZ, Carole Cameron Hubbarth (Rusty) of Austin, TX, stepdaughter, Cheryl Nance of San Diego, CA., granddaughter, Margaret “Meg” Hubbarth-Steiner (Marc) of Wimberly, TX, and her beloved great-granddaughter, Lily Elizabeth Steiner of Wimberly, TX.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Buchanan Arts & Crafts Gallery, 17534 East State Hwy. 29, Buchanan Dam, TX 78609 . Donations can be made in her memory to Lake Buchanan Art Gallery.
