Lois E. Mecham passed to the next life in Austin, TX, on August 4, 2018. She was born April 25, 1929, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to J. Lloyd and Mable O. Mecham. Lois grew up in Austin, graduated from UT Austin with honors in 1950 and completed her Master’s degree at Syracuse University.
Lois worked for the US government in Japan through the mid 1950’s. This gave her a love for the country, people, culture and arts, as any visitors to her home could tell.
Lois then began an impressive 30-year career at USAA in San Antonio. She was a “Women in IT” pioneer, architecting the first computer system which made USAA an automation pioneer in 1957, the “Single Car System” in 1962 and later the revolutionary AIMS system. These kept USAA in the forefront of insurance automation for many decades. The Board of Directors adopted a resolution of appreciation for her many contributions upon Lois’s retirement in 1986 as an Assistant Vice President.
Lois is survived by her brother, Dr. John (Jack) S. Mecham of Kerrville; niece, Nanette Mecham of Kerrville; nephew Steve Mecham and his wife Pat of Austin; plus three grand-nephews, David (wife Kim and four children), Chad (wife Leesha and one child), and Michael (wife Laura) Mecham.
The family wishes to extend our most sincere thanks to the staff of Silverado Onion Creek in Austin for the excellent care provided the last 3 years, and to the Silverado Hospice team for the last several months.
Final arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the San Antonio Symphony to honor Lois’s love of classical music.
