On April 4, 2023, our beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, Leona Glenn Bishop, passed away at her residence at CelesteCare in Horseshoe Bay, Texas after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 89 years old.
Leona is survived by her dedicated husband, Albert (A.W.) Bishop of Austin, Texas; her son, Mike Bishop and his wife Pam of Porter, Texas; daughter Deborah Bishop of Austin, Texas; daughter Karen Porter and her husband Jim of Austin, Texas; daughter Cynthia Spiers and her husband Tracy of Spicewood, Texas; and grandchildren Mac Porter of Detroit, Michigan, Laine Porter of Austin, Texas, and Jay Spiers of Austin, Texas. Leona was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Lillian Gillette.
Leona was born on November 10, 1933, in Crowell, Texas and spent part of her childhood in Monahans before moving to Ft. Stockton, where she and A.W. met and were high school sweethearts. She attended Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth where she received a degree in Music. She and A.W. were married December 29, 1955, and lived in Austin for a short time before settling in Marfa, where they raised their four children.
Leona was a dedicated mother and a very talented piano player. She enjoyed teaching piano and spent most of her life as a pianist at the various churches they attended. Leona and A.W. relocated to Sonora, Texas in 1982, where they lived for 18 years before retiring in the Horseshoe Bay and Austin areas.
During retirement, Leona and A.W. enjoyed family time, being with their grandchildren, and traveling the world. A.W. cared for and nurtured Leona and was by her side until the end. Leona was blessed to have many, many friends that were so special in her life. She will always be remembered for her love of God, love of life, and always wanting to bring a smile to those around her. She was a great hostess, wonderful cook, and loved a good conversation.
The family would like to thank CelesteCare, Accent Hospice, and Magnolia Hospice Care for the wonderful support they provided Leona and her family. If you care to make a gift in memory of Leona, please consider the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
