John Palmer Kyhl passed away peacefully at home June 26th. John was born April 16, 1934 to John Jessen Kyhl and Doris Nancy Palmer. John is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Helen Irene Kyhl and his three children, Juliana Clark (James), Victoria Stephen (Robert) and John Frederick Kyhl (Jennifer) and six grandchildren.
John attended Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1957. After graduation, he did 2 years of service with Army ROTC, stationed in Oklahoma and Louisiana until his discharge in March 1959. John lived Minneapolis area where he worked as an electrical engineer for Northern States Power. In 1966, he moved to Ottumwa, Iowa where he became a district manager with a local utility company. John owned and piloted Cessna planes and was a flight instructor. John and Helen bought a marine construction business and moved to Seabrook, Texas in 1983. John remained in the marine construction business to his retirement.
John was active in Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce in Ottumwa, Iowa. He sang in the church choir throughout his life. He played golf, slow pitch softball, pickle ball and was an avid tennis player. John participated in men's Bible studies. He played the accordion, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and piano. He loved animals, he was so attached to his dogs.
John was so loved.
