Herbert C. Crume was born Oct. 26, 1921 in Aurora, Missouri to Herbert Calhune Crume and Maddie O'Dessie Crume. Predeceased by his brother Ralph Crume, he is survived by his sister Juanice Baker, wife Carol Allen Crume, son Randall Allen Crume, daughter Linda Crume Davis and six grandchildren. Herb was a LT jg in the Navy and served as Captain of a P.T. Boat during World War II, in the Pacific. Upon return from the Navy, he completed his degree at the University of Texas School of Architecture, graduating at the top of his class. Herb met his wife of 69 years, Carol, while teaching architecture classes at UT. After graduation he worked at Fehr and Granger in Austin and then moved to Chicago to work for the prestigious firm of Perkins and Will. Upon returning to Austin, he joined Jessen and Associates, eventually becoming the firm's principal. He was very involved in the Austin Chapter of the AIA as serving president. During his long career he worked on the design and construction of Mueller Airport; Palmer Auditorium, University of Texas Permian Basin Campus, and numerous other state and school projects. His mid-century modern home in Austin, which he designed and built in 1953, was featured in the Austin Historical Society home tour in 2014. A memorial service to honor Herb's long life and accomplishments will be held at a later date.
