Edward Gene Maslyk, 86, passed away on September 14, 2016 after a battle with cancer. Edward was born in Hamtramck, Michigan on July 30, 1930 to John Joseph Maslyk and Victoria Carol (Maksymowicz) Maslyk. Edward graduated from Lincoln High School in Van Dyke, Michigan, class of 1948, along with his future wife Barbara J. Laski. In 1947 he had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps reserves and after graduation became a recruit. Edward had a successful military career between the Marine Corps and United States Navy. He had attended flight and aerial navigation school but was most adept at foreign languages being proficient in Japanese, Polish, and Russian. Edward performed several classified duties during the Cold War. While in the Marine Corps, Edward was a sharpshooter and marksman with pistol and rifle winning many competitions. In addition, Edward received several Letters of Commendation and medals including those for Korean Service, Good Conduct, United Nations Service, and National Defense Service. Edward became an officer in 1958 and after 23 years of service retired in 1970 as 1st Lieutenant achieving 2nd Lieutenant commission in 1977 in the Marine Corps reserves. On June 27, 1953, Edward married Barbara and together went to various military locations including Japan during Edward’s military career. After retirement the family settled in San Antonio, Texas where Edward began a short career as a polygrapher. He later worked for the State of Texas as an alcohol and drug counselor for prison inmates in Gatesville, Texas. Edward had a thirst for knowledge attending classes at the University of Maryland, Far East campus (Japan), Loyola University in Baltimore, San Antonio College, and received his BA in Russian language in 1971 from San Jose State College, CA as well as earning another BA at The University of Texas at San Antonio in 1978 in Psychology. Edward enjoyed working on model airplanes and puzzles and had a love for Chinese food like no other. Most of all he loved spending time with his children. Edward is survived by his wife of 63 years, Basia, and his four children, Gregory, Kasia (future son-in-law Bill Sagoonik), Steven, and Paul (daughter-in-law Ann Scott). He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Burness Annette (Sendrow) and brother-in-law George Laski. He has several nieces and nephews and four grandchildren, Jonathan, Adrianne, Sarah, and Dylan. The family would like to thank the Pflugerville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care of Ed during his final days. No funeral service is planned. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to donate to their favorite charity in honor of Ed.
