It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Doreen Ann Dusterhoft, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, on Thursday July 16, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on January 9, 1937, in Grand Forks, ND, Doreen was the cherished daughter of the late John Henry Schumacher and Dorothy Margaret Stein. Her journey through life was marked by love, devotion, and a warmth that touched all who knew her.
Doreen is predeceased by her loving parents, John and Dorothy Schumacher, her brother Bill Schumacher, sister Eileen Knepper, and her dear son Alan Torgerson. The family also grieves the loss of her grandsons, Chad Smith and Luke Torgerson.
Doreen’s legacy of love continues through her surviving family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: son David Torgerson and his wife Lori, daughter Debra Gutirez and her husband John, son Richard Torgerson and his wife Lorri, and daughter Lori Lively and her husband Jon Kercher. Doreen also leaves behind her devoted brother, Larry Schumacher, and his wife Carol, Lucy Schumacher wife of Bill and Dave Knepper, husband of Eileen.
A proud and loving grandmother, Doreen, or Grammy to many, was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride into her life. Beyond her immediate family, Doreen's heart and home were always open for many stepchildren and step-grandchildren, and she embraced many extended family members as her own.
Doreen attended Sacred Heart Catholic school and although she didn’t graduate it didn’t stop her from working very hard to care for her children including working as a potato truck driver and later a chef for the School for the Blind in Grand Forks. Doreen loved to cook and always had the freezer full of cookies she baked. Mom lived in Grand Forks for most of her life until she moved to live with David in Texas to be near him and daughters Debbie and Lori. We were blessed to have her here for almost 28 years.
Outside of her professional life, Doreen was an active member of the Eagles Club in East Grand Forks, MN, where she formed lasting friendships and shared many happy moments. Her favorite pastimes included sewing and watching sports, especially the Fighting Sioux hockey. She attended every hockey game David played no matter how late. She enjoyed watching her great grandchildren playing hockey and baseball
Some of the most memorable times were enjoyed at her cabin on Maple Lake in Mentor Minnesota where she enjoyed fishing and feeding the chipmunks and hummingbirds.
In honor of Doreen’s love for her community and the joy she found in helping others, the family kindly suggests that memorial contributions be made to an organization close to her heart, or to a charity of your choice. As we bid farewell to Doreen, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will forever be ingrained in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
There will be a Celebration of Life at 2 PM, Saturday, August 1, at 105 Cozy Oak Way, Liberty Hill, TX. A Celebration in Grand Forks for interment will be announced at a later date.
