Cherie Janet Shoemaker of Austin, Texas passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the age of 89. She was born on May 13, 1933, in Mexico, Indiana on a farm bordering the Eel River and grew up in Indianapolis but spent the summers in the Logansport, Indiana area with Grandma Claudine, Aunt Grace and all the cousins.
She graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1951 and took college classes at IUPUI. She was a real estate broker in both Indianapolis and in the Austin area. She taught real estate classes for many years.
She was a member of the Poetry Society of Austin. Her poems have appeared in Austin Networking Magazine, Laity News Brief, Time Exposures, and the Journal of Poetry in the Arts. She was an artist who enjoyed working with acrylics and chalk. She lived on Lake Travis near Austin and much of her artwork reflects her love of the water, sail boats and nature. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren art, taking them to plays and the ballet, and taking them on nature walks where she photographed flowers.
She was preceded in death by her best friend and adoring ex-husband Albert Shoemaker, her parents Marie Stiles and Harry Enyart, and stepfather Ted Stiles and her brother Jerry Enyart.
She is survived by her daughters Lynda Rife (Wally Vog) and Janet Meadors, and grandchildren Zach Rife (Marissa Rife), Alex Rife, Courtney Taylor (Stephen Taylor), Jessie Meadors, Samantha Meadors (Seth Perkins), and great-grandchildren Jackson, Addie, Lexi Taylor and Talia Rife and her sisters Marilyn Basso and Carolyn Dicks.
The family would like to thank the staff of SoCo Village and Magnolia Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Cherie. The hugs and smiles brightened her days. We are grateful.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life service in Austin on May 13th. For details, email Lynda at [email protected].
