Charles Guy Brown Jr., known affectionately to many as Charlie Brown and his family as Bubba, completed his earthly journey and was called “Home to be with the Lord” on January 27, 2025, at 89, surrounded by his beloved family. While his departure leaves a void, those who knew him will forever carry the echoes of his laughter, wisdom, and unwavering zest for life.
Born in Henderson, Texas, on January 9, 1936, to Charles Guy Brown Sr. and Mary Margaret Phillips Brown, Charlie spent his early years in East Texas before making his mark at Kinkaid School in Houston. A standout athlete and natural leader, he served on the student council, captained the basketball team, and lettered in football, baseball, and basketball—a trifecta of excellence. As a proud Falcon, he never lost his school spirit, staying connected to his alma mater long after graduation.
Charlie pursued higher education at Colorado School of Mines, where he served as freshman class president and continued his love for sports. He later transferred to the University of Colorado, earning a degree in geology in 1960 and becoming a proud brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity. His professional life took him back to Houston, where he built Charlie Brown Insurance Brokerage into a respected and thriving business.
But Charlie’s success story began in April 1980, when he met the love of his life, Sherry Brown. For 44 years, they shared a deep and joyful partnership—traveling, laughing, and embracing the beauty of life together. Through triumphs and heartaches, their love remained an unshakable foundation.
A man of many passions, Charlie found solace and thrill on the golf course, where he once made a Hole in One and a Double Eagle Albatross (a golfer’s holy grail). He was a gym regular, a dedicated sports fan, and a connoisseur of horse racing, frequently found at tracks in California and Kentucky. With a mind as sharp as his wit, Charlie mastered crossword puzzles and approached card games with a shark’s instinct. Above all, he never met a stranger, collecting stories and friendships wherever he went.
After profound personal tragedies within his family, Charlie felt a calling to attend seminary school, where he sought and found salvation. He graduated from The Anglican School of Theology in Dallas, deepening his faith and commitment to serving others. His love for Christ was unwavering, and his generosity knew no bounds—whether through his involvement in church groups, mission work in Mexico, or simply by being a steadfast friend and encourager. Most recently, he found a spiritual home at Life Family Church in Austin, Texas, under the guidance of Pastors Randy & Denise Phillips.
Charlie is now reunited with his parents, his sister Margaret Still and her husband, Judge Charles Still, his nieces Mary Lynn Barnes and Sue Walton, his brother James P. “Cootie” Brown, and his beloved daughters Sandy and Lindsay.
He leaves behind his cherished wife, Sherry Brown, and their loyal four-legged companion, Bogey. Also carrying his legacy forward is daughter Lisa Hawes and her husband, George Hawes, along with grandchildren Taylor & Samantha Hawes, Brenden & Molly Hawes, and great-grandchildren Camryn, Harper, Grayson, Luke, and Tenley of Bellingham, Washington. Daughter Stacia Navarro and her husband Joe Navarro, Charlie Brown’s best buddy and partner-in-crime, together with their fur babies Bianca and Jack of Austin, Texas. Granddaughter Courtney Robinson and her husband, Eric Robinson, of Houston, Texas. Nephews Charles & Elyee Still of Tyler, Texas, and Steve Still of Big Sandy, Texas. Brother-in-law Stephen Gajewski and his wife, ShaWanna, of Detroit, Michigan.
Charlie Brown had an unforgettable presence—a quick wit, a kind heart, and a light that filled every room. He was equal parts wisdom and mischief, faith and fun. He leaves behind a treasure trove of memories, a legacy of love, and a reminder to live life fully, laugh often, and always bet on the long shot.
