

Carolyn Barnes Gullatt, 89, of Austin, TX passed away peacefully with her husband, John, at her side on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Carolyn was born May 12, 1937 in Monroe, LA to Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Barnes. The family moved to Crowley, LA in 1940 where Carolyn and her brother, Thomas, grew up.
Carolyn attended Crowley High School and was active in band, the Pep Squad and was on the Homecoming Court. Carolyn met her future husband, John Gullatt, on the first night at a freshman dance at Louisiana Tech. Carolyn was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.
John and Carolyn were married in 1958, and after graduating from LA Tech, they moved to Atlanta, GA so John could pursue his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. Carolyn taught 3rd grade until the birth of their first daughter, Julie in 1960. In 1962 John graduated from Georgia Tech and accepted a job with Honeywell in Clearwater, FL. Their second daughter, Amy, was born in 1963 and their third daughter, Kathryn, was born in 1965. In 1966, the family moved to Austin, TX, where John accepted a new position at Tracor, Inc.
Carolyn became active as a room mother in her daughters' schools, in the Junior Austin Womens Club, and was a charter member of both the Austin Junior Forum and Austin Assistance League. She also became active in her DZ sorority again, serving first as National Vice President, 4 years as National President, and finally became a National Panhellenic Representative for several years.
After retiring from sorority work, Carolyn took up quilting and made numerous friends in quilting bees and as part of the Quilt Guild, where she served on many committees and as VP and President for two years.
John and Carolyn enjoyed traveling across the U.S., in Europe, Canada, and also took several cruises. Carolyn's favorite pastime was being with family, especially enjoying family game nights with the kids and grandkids.
Carolyn was pre-deceased by her parents, "Sonny and Tot". She leaves behind husband John in Austin, TX; daughter Julie Keaveny (and husband James) in Irving, TX; daughters Amy Minor and Kathy Hearn in Austin, TX; and grandchildren Megan Keaveny in NY City, NY; Austin Keaveny (and wife Erin) in Dallas, TX; and Aaron Minor, John Hearn and William Hearn in Austin, TX; brother Thomas Barnes in Shady Cove, OR; sister-in-law Marilyn Gullatt in Ruston, LA; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial service is pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local animal shelter of your choosing.
