Born in Bakersfield, California, to Charles Vernon Wilks and Altha Williams, Barbara spent much of her childhood moving throughout the West Coast as her father worked building roads for the Federal Highway Administration. After graduating from Colton High School, she attended nursing school. It was during this time that she met and married Glen Taylor, her husband of nearly 64 years.
In the early years of their marriage, Barbara held a variety of jobs. She worked as a fire spotter in a Colorado fire tower, taught at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, and later worked as a librarian while Glen attended law school.
Barbara and Glen eventually made their way to the East Coast, where they welcomed their three daughters. The family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1970s before returning to Texas in the mid-1980s. Barbara made the Austin area her home in 1989 and remained there for the rest of her life.
In their later years, Barbara and Glen shared a love of travel, exploring destinations around the world, including Russia, Switzerland, France, Morocco, and the Netherlands. However, she found her greatest joys closer to home, doting on her family, tending her garden, and spoiling her beloved pets. Those who knew her will remember her warm embrace, puckish sense of humor, and keen intellect. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
Barbara is survived by her three daughters, Jessica Taylor, Hillary Branda, and Jennifer Bridges, and her three granddaughters, Kathleen Palmridge, Victoria Davilla, and Emily Bridges.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Lakeway, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
