Barbara was born on October 24, 1944, in Seminole, Oklahoma to Edmond and Jean Hejl. She was raised in Lancaster, Texas alongside her beloved younger sister, Betty. Bright, driven, and full of spirit, Barbara stood out early in life — becoming captain of the Lancaster Tigerettes Drill Team and developing a deep love of science.
She began her college education in Chemistry at East Texas State University, but paused her studies to marry the love of her life, Ronnie Ridley George of Greenville, Texas. Together, they raised two sons, Robert and Jim, who were the center of Barbara’s world.
Once her children were grown, Barbara returned to her academic dreams, earning a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Medical Technology from the University of Texas, graduating summa cum laude. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, a testament to her dedication and intellect.
Barbara worked for many years as a medical technologist at the University of Texas Student Health Center, and later at Seton Hospital in Southwest Austin, bringing precision and compassion to her work.
In the 1990s, Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer — a challenge she met with unwavering strength. Her resilience gave her many more vibrant years, during which she truly lived. She competed in triathlons as a proud cancer survivor, learned to play piano, traveled the world photographing wildflowers and wildlife, and shared her voice and joy through music in the choir and handbell ensemble at Oak Hill United Methodist Church.
Last summer, Barbara’s cancer returned, and though her battle was short, her grace and courage never faltered.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Ronnie Ridley George of Austin, Texas; her son Jim George, daughter-in-law Amy, and grandsons Silas and Eli, all of Brisbane, Australia; and her sister Betty Bearden of Dallas, Texas.
Barbara is preceded in death by her son Robert George and her parents, Edmond and Jean Hejl.
Barbara’s life was filled with curiosity, creativity, and care for others. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Memorial service details will be shared by the family in the coming days.
