Alice Louise Stephens

Alice was born on Sunday, May 31, 1936, to Philip and Audrey Larson in Midland, Texas. The joy she brought to her family that beautiful late-spring morning became the defining quality of her life. Growing up in a working-class family, Alice helped care for her younger brothers and sister and learned early that a meaningful life is built through service to others.

She completed her undergraduate studies at North Texas State University, where she was active in Alpha Delta Pi and was remembered fondly by her sorority sisters as especially popular and beloved. Alice then pursued nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating with the nursing class of 1959.

Alice brought lasting joy to Jerry when she accepted his invitation to share a life of adventure and love. They were married on September 7, 1959, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly 68 years. Together they built a life marked by resilience, travel, faith and service. She was the loving mother of their daughter, Susan, born in 1966, and their son, David, born in 1970. Through difficult times as well as happy ones, Alice met life with courage, patience and her unmistakable loving smile.

Her nursing career followed the family through several chapters of their life. Alice first worked after they moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where Jerry’s petroleum-engineering assignment involved Canada’s first producing helium well. She later served patients at St. David’s Hospital in Austin while Jerry completed his Master of Public Administration at The University of Texas at Austin; at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock while he worked on the Governor’s staff; and finally at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. Alice continued nursing until age 78, completing a remarkable career of compassionate care.

A lifelong Christian and Methodist, Alice shared her light through summer camps, a Reunion Group, Contemporary Forum Sunday School class and First United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Texas. Her faith was expressed most clearly in the way she welcomed, encouraged and cared for others.

Alice’s life can be characterized by one word: joy. She gave joy to her parents, siblings, classmates, patients, friends, church family, children and husband. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, generosity, constancy and smile.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11 am at First United Methodist Church, 410 E. University, Georgetown, Texas.

Surviving family members include her husband of 68 years Jerry Stephens, their daughter Susan Wright and granddaughter Audrey Ramsower Stephens.

In lieu of flowers, Alice would take great joy in knowing donations were made in her name to one of her favorite charities: Doctors Without Borders, Project HOPE, Mercy Ships, Friends of the Earth or First United Methodist Church Georgetown, Texas.
