“Slow but Sho!”, or after being greeted with an “It’s good to see you Mr. Tom”; he would respond without hesitation, “It’s good to be seen.” Tom Hubbard always left others with a memorable quip and a smile to go home with. Known as Tommy by his family and friends back in his hometown of Sylacauga, Alabama, Tommy always was one to share his clever wit and charm, even before moving to Georgia. Tom will be remembered for his sidesplitting tongue-twisting poems of Petey the Snake and from the “Primrose path”. William Thomas Hubbard, 92, of Tucker GA, left us all to be with His Lord on Jan 23, 2024.
Tom was born in Winterboro, AL in 1931 to Newman Milton Hubbard and Lucy Florene Rogers Hubbard, the youngest of 4. Growing up in Sylacauga, AL and after graduating from high school in 1949, Tom knew he had the goal to serve his nation, so he joined the United States Marine Corp, where he served with honor and distinction for the love of his country.
Tom later met the love of his life while living in Atlanta, where he met the beautiful Marilyn Yvonne Clarke at First Baptist Church of Atlanta. They married in 1963 in Donalsonville Ga. While living in Atlanta, Tom and Yvonne welcomed home their first of 2 children, Pamela Kelly, born in 1967. In July ’67 they moved to Tucker where in 1970, Jonathan Clarke was born. The two were the world to them both. Tom’s son Clarke would later have 2 children, Ella Grace and Harrison Clarke, both now college students in Athens GA.
Tom was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Tucker, where he and Yvonne raised their children to love and respect the Lord. Being a part of a church and community that loved others was important to them both.
Tom worked in the industrial machinery industry for Brainard-Kilman Drill Company of Stone Mountain until he retired in 1992. Not being able to sit still in retirement, he returned to work part-time working at nearby Nesbit Elementary School from 1993 -1996.
He always had an interest in DIY projects for around the house and yard, but he had a special love for vegetable gardening. His daughter Kelly remembers as a kid how her dad always had the best vegetables to share with family and friends. He took enormous pride in his vegetable gardens throughout his life.
Tom was preceded in death by his lovely bride, Marilyn Yvonne, November 2017, and his parents Newman Milton, 1957 and Lucy Florene, 1988. Also preceded in death are his sisters Ruby Dell, 1943, Mary Celeste Hubbard Coleman, 1999, Tella Frances (Cissy) Hubbard Wyatt, 2009, his brother Newman Dixon Hubbard, Sr, 2005, his nephew Newman Dixon Hubbard Jr., 2021, and great-niece Robin Lynn Hubbard, 2018.
Tom is survived by his daughter Pamela (Kelly) Douglass and her husband Darryl of Eatonton GA, and son Jonathan (Clarke) Hubbard of Buford GA. He also leaves behind 2 grandchildren, Ella Grace and Harrison Clarke Hubbard, both of Buford GA., along with many nieces, and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life and memorial service for Tom’s family and friends are scheduled for March 23rd at First Baptist Church of Tucker. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am, the service follows at 11:30. A reception will be held in the Main Street Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. After the reception, there will be a short graveside service with Military Honors at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
