Sue Bess Jones Robison passed away March 3, 2017, in Atlanta at the age of 104 following a brief illness. She was born on September 29, 1912, in Manassas, Georgia, to Daniel Elza Jones and Annie Belle Gilmore Jones, both descendants of early settlers of Georgia. After graduating from high school in Pavo, Georgia, she attended Trevecca College in Nashville. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Peabody College in Nashville, graduating during the Depression. She enjoyed a rewarding career as a high school teacher of English and French first in Americus and then Chamblee, Georgia. She also taught at Appalachian State Teachers College. She felt that “the future of any civilization lies with its children,” and she “enjoyed seeing young people take ideas and develop them.” During and after World War II, she taught at East Mississippi Junior College, Scooba Mississippi. While there, she met and married John Conrad Robison. After returning to Atlanta with her family in 1958, Mrs. Robison earned a master’s degree in Library Science at Emory University and was the head librarian at the newly opened Lakeside High School until her retirement in 1975. Having grown up in the Church of the Nazarene, she joined the Methodist Church after her marriage, and was an active member of Tucker Methodist and Oak Grove United Methodist Churches. A lifelong Democrat, Mrs. Robison served on the Executive Committee of the DeKalb County Democratic Party in the 1980's. She became an avid genealogist in later life, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Robison was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad, and survived by sons Gilmore Robison (the Venerable Konchog Dorje), Steve Robison (wife Trish Flaster), daughter Susan Robison (husband Wayne Ackman), and grandsons Wesley Robison and Dr. Jonathan Dameworth. A memorial service will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to a fund of one’s choice at the Carter Center or Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
